Culture SHOCK

My team is mostly from Texas and Alabama...I've never heard so many people say "y'all" in my life. That in itself was a culture shock haha!

We headed to a city called Karatu, where the medical clinic and evangelizing takes place. (Evangelizing simply means to share the gospel). On our 3 hour drive to Karatu, I was in awe by the people and things I saw.

We saw tons of women carry heavy baskets on their heads. Look at that balance, she has this down to a tee! I say this basket weighs a good 127 lbs! :)

1, 2, 3, PUSH Y'ALL!!!

The best moment ever was when this little guy came biking pass our bus and said, "Hey man!" Wish I got a picture of him because it sure was cute!

Tanzania is the friendliest place I've ever been to. Everyone here waves and smiles at you! Sure most of them are skeptical at first because they may have never seen a Muzungo(white person). Funny thing, they didn't know what to call an Asian so they opted with calling me a Muzungo Indian(I forget how to say Indian in Swahili). But once you smile and wave, they fill up with excitement.

As we are driving along, it was difficult for me to take in what I was seeing. Little kids roaming by themselves and herding dozens of cows. Women carrying buckets filled with water to the rim on their heads. School girls and boys walking home in their adorable little outfits. My eyes were seeing extreme poverty for the very first time. This is what you see on TV, ads, and the internet. To see it in person was absolutely surreal. I had to remind myself that this is how people live and survive. This is their lives. I am so blessed to not only see their culture but also to experience it. Feels like my heart has been in Africa for so long and now my eyes get experience this breath taking country.

My love for these people is beyond any love I can offer. This is Jesus' perfect love overflowing from me. I don't know these people and I have yet to meet them but I can't help to fall in (incomprehensible) love with them. All I brought on this mission trip are a few Swahili phrases, a testimony, and a heart to serve Tanzania and God. And that's enough. God uses you to impact others where your heart is at.

So we finally arrive at the Reed Buck Hotel(pronounced Red Buck?). We met the rest of the team and there's a LOTTA people from all over the world. Just to name a few of my peeps; Lindsey from Idaho, Lori from Washington, Lindsay from Alabama, Aisha from England, Troy from Kenya(Africa), Jana from Texas, Justin from Kansas, and me from California! Really, we're all over the map! So neat to see God hand pick people from all over the world to serve on this mission trip. It just means He will do miraculous things through us. After meeting my teammates, we met local pastors(they call them Nationals) from the area. They are the most loving people I've ever met! And they have a cool and funky handshake! Some of them could only speak Swahili and I was nervous because of the language barrier. But really, God is far greater than any language barrier. I'm convinced they speak the language of love in Tanzania! And would you look at that, I know how to speak that too! Ha, a handshake and smile goes a long way here. Each smile and handshake I received has been engraved in my heart. Some nationals I met: Gideon, Samuel, Vincent, Yuseph, Jack, Lucky, Immanuel, Joseph, Michael, Christopher, Jared, Enoch, Amos.
Nationals and cute little boys(David&Elijah) during worship.

I went out with Lindsey, Kelah, and our translator Jared to share Jesus with some people. This is the evangelism cube and our tool to share the gospel! It's genius on how it unfolds and it has great visuals that come with it.
SO CRAZY!!! Kelah shared and two people accepted Jesus. Lindsey shared and another two people accepted. One of the ladies was skeptical and even said, "we can do this in the middle of a road?" Yeah you can accept Jesus anywhere...it doesn't have to be formal or in a church. Jesus was born in a manger and not a fancy inn(Luke 2:7) AND He rode around on a donkey. He is humble and accessible for us all. Anyways, then I shared for the first time to my kind of audience - KIDS! They were so curious and in awe of what the cube does. Sorta like my wonderful Sunday school kids back at Hope Chapel, HB. Originally I shared with the kids named Job, Ishmael, and Joel but because the cube is such a magnet, it pulled in a good five people. At the end, everyone said they already have Jesus but one guy. I shared the cube again and Praise God, he prayed a prayer to accept Jesus into his heart. "That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved!" Romans 10:9. This verse makes it simple enough to pray&believe so we can be with God forever, ain't it? It's God's FREE gift of salvation to everyone in Africa, America, and the whole world.

I've been resting on Matthew 9:37-38 for quite some time. It says, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."The harvest out here is unbelievably plentiful and people are so receiving. I praise God that I get to be one of His workers to spread the good news across the street and across the world. He chooses imperfect people to perfect His work, even knowing how much we mess up. He is so, so good.

Land, Ho!

(Off the airplane) WHOOHOOOO! We made it to Kilimanjaro and it's 8:20 PM. Time here is 10 hours ahead of the time in SoCal! So we rode on a bus for an hour to get to our hotel - Joshmal Hotel in Arusha. I didn't know cars drove in the opposite lane in Tanzania. The dirt road is so small yet two big buses can fit alongside each other. Definitely not designed for such thing but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do! Our first meal foreshadowed what's to come again, again, and again. We had rice, mystery meat, greens, pasta, and bananas. It wasn't bad! I'm thinking the mystery meat is goat but who knows what's slipped in there.

12:10 AM - I woke up after a couple hours to a woman screaming her head off. Scary and alarming to say the least. In helpless situations, I can only pray to Jesus, so that's what I did.

4:04 AM - Another wake up but this time to an African man who was singing like Ariel the Little Mermaid(in his case, Merman). I chuckled to myself but this is NOT fun after two hours of real sleep in two days. Now I'm awake for good, thanks Merman.

This is my view from the hotel. Dirt roads, faded houses, beautiful people. And could you believe it was starting to rain?! Tanzania is a tropical place.

To the ends of the earth

I am officially the worse fly-er ever. Here's a list of things I didn't do right.
1. My best friend, Kristine drove me to LAX airport and we got lost a good 4 times.
2. My bug spray found its way into my carry on. (Doesn't fly with the no liquids in carry on rule)
3. I was in Terminal 52A instead of 59A.
...Well, no wonder e3 advised us to show up 3 hours earlier than our departure!

Wowwwww, it hasn't hit me that I'm going to Africa. This is one of my biggest dreams. I feel like I'm going alone but not really. God is with me, always. Plus, I will meet some of the team in Amsterdam. I'm excited beyond comprehension. From this mission trip, I want to gain more of God's vision and love for people. I want to bring hope to Tanzania. I am ready.

(On the airplane) I didn't know how brutal the flight would be. The last time I flew was an hour flight to Vegas and that in itself made me want to hurl. I know, such a sissy! Thankfully, I wasn't nauseous throughout the 22 hours of travel time. I actually enjoy flying! After the take off, I saw buildings and people but as we flew higher, it turned to neighborhoods. Flying higher, I saw brown and blue clumps here and there. And eventually the view was infinite, coated with fluffy clouds from every direction. I know most of you have flown before but I can't believe how detailed everything is. I love seeing God's blueprint of His creation.

♫ Fill up my heart with song, for the journey is LONG and I need Your strength ♫

Tomorrow is THE day. Mission Trip #1, lets do this!

I've been waiting for tomorrow to come for the past two months. I didn't get much sleep last night...probably because of all the adrenaline! I feel good, minus the malaria meds that made me puke my eyes out this morning :( BOO!! The medicine is designed to clean out the bacteria in my intestines so barfing is normal, still lame though. Also, I finished packing an hour ago, praise God. Now I can focus on resting in the Lord :) Keep me in your prayers! As always, thank you!

Don Poythress - Fill me up
Fill up my lungs with air, my voice with prayer
And my mouth with praise
Fill up my heart with song, for the journey is LONG
And I need Your strength
Jesus, Your love is more than enough
Come and fill me, Fill me up

Heart's Desire

HI, hello! :)

I made this blog to bring a chunk of my mission trips home to your computer screen. Things I see, hear, and experience supernaturally from God on the mission field will be shared with you. My very FIRST international mission trip happens to be in Tanzania, Africa (May 23rd-June 2nd). I'm going with an organization called e3partners(equip.evangelize.establish. I loveeeee Africa! God is amazing in calling me to the place my heart loves and desires to experience. I'm going on an extreme medical trip with 30 people from around the U.S. I'm the only one from California going. I'm the only Asian going(not that it really matters but just to make it more dramatic..) We'll be sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with people who may have never heard it...crazy. It's going to be surreal going to a place where people literally have never heard the name Jesus Christ. And also, we'll be educating them with an HIV/AIDS awareness cube. This takes me back to high school where I wrote a paper on HIV/AIDS in the most infected place around the world - Africa. Stats: 2.2 million AIDS death annually, 29 million living with AIDS). I remember feeling...why is this still happening, why don't more people step up?! Now, through the power of Christ, I get to. Jesus is faithful in giving me the desires of my heart. This 11 day journey begins in 4 short days. Join me in my mission endeavors by reading my blogs, seeing pictures&videos, and praying to Jesus with me. Granted, I don't think we'll be getting internet in Tanzania :( soooo when I come back, I'll have to post everything from my journal!

Dictionary.com:
Witness - One who can give a firsthand account of something seen, heard, or experienced.

This is a really detailed definition of what the word "witness" means. I'll break it down for y'all with how it applies to me and JC. I have firsthand witnessed Jesus Christ. I have seen Him perform miracles in my life. I have heard His voice. I experience Him daily. I know and love Him. Anyone can witness Jesus but only if you're willing to see, hear, and experience Him. Being the firsthand account means receiving the most accurate and personal experience; not being the second/third/fourth.

Practical Example: 1. I witnessed a car accident where an impatient driver switched lanes and rear ended a car, which in turn almost hit some bikers. If I retell this story to another person, they may misinterpret it and think 2. oh, the impatient driver switched lanes, rear ended a car, AND hit some bikers. And that person retells it to a third party with the story of 3. a patient driver switched lanes and got hit by a car and some bikers. And so on. The first story btw is a true story where my friends and I were the bikers! Yikes, thank God for living to tell the story!

It's the same with Jesus. Misunderstandings happen all the time. Unless you hear, see, or experience things firsthand, it's hard to believe it, right? But I can guarantee you, no, HE can guarantee you that if you truly seek and call on Him, you'll find Him.
